Common name of boxwood is in reference to the prior use of the wood to make boxes. Another theory on common name is that the name is in reference to young plant stems which are quadrangular

‘Elegantissima’ is a dense, mounded, compact form of boxwood that features bright variegated foliage. Elliptic to oval, evergreen leaves are medium green with broad but irregular white margins.

A more heat and drought tolerant form of this species, with superior insect and disease resistance. Densely pyramidal form with glossy green leaves that fade to clear butter yellow in fall. Winter bark is pinkish-orange with prominent exfoliation. Large tree as focal point or for shading. Deciduous.
